You will need a reproduction percussion cap type; “3 band” rifle or musket. The 1853 British Enfield 3 band Rifle is the “Official” rifle of Company D. Photos of original Enfield from Company D is listed at bottom of this page. 1842 Springfield Smoothbore Muskets, 1861 Springfield rifles, and 1862 Richmond Armory Rifles are also acceptable. Due to safety concerns, NO rifles made in Pakistan or India will be allowed. You will also need a bayonet with scabbard to fit your particular musket. Standing order for “Company D”; All Rilfes will be clean at all times unless you are firing rifle. We will teach you how to field clean your rifle, but you must maintain your rifle when not at events.

Rifles of the 2nd Maryland Infantry (1862-1865)

Some former members of 1st Maryland Infantry Regiment  brought their arms when the Regiment disbanded in summer of 1862 to the new formation of the soon to be 2nd Maryland Infantry. As other new members join the ranks of the newly created 2nd Maryland Infantry, they were issued what was available. In addition to the 1841 Mississippi Rifle (.54 cal) and the 1842 Springfield Smoothbore (.69 cal), some men were issued the British P53 Enfield Rifle (.577 cal) and the 1861 Springfield Rifle (.58 cal). It has been documented that the men of 2nd Maryland had their preference from capture weapons or what's on hand and they preferred weapons that had the "bluing" or "brown/bronzing" as it was easier to maintain (clean/prevent rust) in the field. It is evident they prized the weapons with the bronzing/bluing in the existing original Enfield rifle belonging to Pvt. Richard Shepard of Company D 2nd Maryland (photos at bottom of page). He took the time, effort, and money to engrave his rifle with his name.
